Al-Bayan Center for Planning and Studies held a dialogue session entitled “Governorate Councils: Long Wait and Suspended Hopes”.
The session hosted the former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Secretary-General of the Civil Gathering for Reform, Dr. Salim al-Jubouri, and the head of the Itqadar Watani Alliance and former Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Abdul-Hussein Abtan.
Al-Jubouri pointed out the weakness of political parties in fulfilling their desired roles, and the low turnout of citizens in the last elections, as factors for delaying the hopes placed on the governorate councils.
For his part, Abtan described the elections using a list system as a positive step, noting that it will contribute to speeding up the process of forming local administrations in the governorates.
A group of academics, journalists, researchers, and representatives of political parties attended the session.
